This weekend I met a magical hoverfly. Why magical? Because this is by far the most magical and festive photograph I have ever taken. As soon as I saw the result, I imagined this fly to be a character out of Alice in Wonderland. Those giant round eyes and delicate transparent wings are perfect compliments to the whimsical pattern of his yellow behind – hovering above a background of delicate pinks and greens, punctuated with bright yellow stars which complete this beautiful world. A snapshot of the most perfect moment in time and space.
Wow…..absolutely beautiful Laura! I do believe this is one of the best that I have seen for a while. The colors of the flower, the fly, the little yellow “twinkles” I absolutely love this one!

Thanks Margaret, I love your comment! I am so proud of this one. I took my camera to the park, by myself, no time constraints, and just truly enjoyed myself. I’m so happy to hear you love it too!

Simply superb. Hoverflies will always be special for me, in part because they carry their own natural vibration-reduction mechanisms and at times will live up to their names perfectly, holding absolutely still in mid-flight. And this whimsical background, too–what a great combination. No wonder you’re so proud of this one!

Thank you Gary, I am so glad you can understand my pride in this photo. I will have to find some time to read about the vibration mechanisms you mentioned, I think it is something I will also find very fascinating.

I was referring to their similarity to the vibration-reduction systems in our cameras and lenses. Both are magic!

Ah, without those systems all of my photos would be absolute rubbish… and even with them, a lot of them are still rubbish!

Thanks Pete, it was a beautiful and unplanned moment where everything just fell together (I really cant take much credit for it, other than taking the photo). I really got lucky with this one 🙂

Thanks Mark,
Everything was so tiny, I didn’t even know it was a good photo until I looked at it at home.
