Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake was one of the destinations on my trip to Canada last year. The purpose of this trip was to see some of Canada’s natural wonders, the beauty of the mountains and the amazing wildlife that call this country home. This lake was one of the many highlights of my trip. There are few places in the world that are as photogenic as this turquoise lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains which provide a stunning backdrop. Located in the Valley of Ten Peaks, the lake is filled with glacial runoff which gives the water its signature color. As the glaciers thaw, the trickling water collects rock flour (sediment) on the way to the lake, formed by erosion of the rocks as the glaciers grind against them. This is a place in the world where photography cannot live up to actually being there. The crispness of the air, the tranquility of the forest, and the magnitude of the mountains all contribute to the magnificence of Moraine Lake.

  1. How refreshing it would be to take a (quick!) dip in that lovely water after a nice, long, strenuous hike carrying cameras, tripod, backpack, food, and water. I’ve not yet been able to get to the Canadian Rockies, but I’d sure love to some day. Thanks for the inspiration, Laura!

    1. Hi Gary, I most definitely would not be game enough to put myself in that water… I think ‘refreshing’ may be the wrong word 😉
You would have an amazing time, I can’t even imagine how fantastic your photos would be!
Hope you get the chance to go one day, it’s well worth it.

      1. Awww, come on. One (I did take the precaution of saying quick!) dip in that water would probably keep you refreshed for days! And thanks for the high compliment–but you did some fine work here, too. Did you get a chance to get back on a hiking trail in those gorgeous woods? I’d surely love to see some details!

      2. Lol, I did notice your use of ‘quick’ but for me it could never be quick enough, I’d be an instant block of ice! I did do some hiking through the woods, I shall have to trawl through my photos again and see what I can find 🙂

  2. I just got back from Canada and I saw this beautiful lake too. It is breathtaking. Unfortunately, it was raining when I was there and I don’t have any pictures as beautiful as yours. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photo.

  3. Nice pictures of an iconic lake! I was in the area a couple of weeks ago, but this time we were backcountry camping at Mount Robson and only passed through Jasper, Banff, Th eParkway et al. Your pictures of Moraine Lake take me back to a great summer adventure!

    1. Welcome,
Happy to bring back great memories for you! I would love to do more of the Canadian Rockies at some point, if you have any suggestions of other beautiful places to see, I’d love to hear them 🙂

      1. Originally we were planning to visit Jasper this summer, but after seeing pictures of Berg Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park nearby in BC, we built our whole vacation around visiting that site. One catch: it’s in the backcountry, and requires a hike in or helicopter ride and – unless you’re an endurance athlete – at least one night of backpacking and camping. We made the effort and loved it. I’ve been blogging about it, if you want to see some pics and read more details.

      2. Berg Lake looks amazing (in Google images), I can see why you would make the effort to hike there! Will most definitely check our your blog posts! Thanks so much for the info.
